Tenerife Travel Guide
The largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife is a destination of choice among visitors who are looking for a sun and fun filled escape from routine. There’s nothing humdrum about Tenerife. This tropical paradise hosts one of the largest carnivals in the world, the Carnival of Santa Cruz and makes one of the best wines and cheeses anywhere.
The 10-day Santa Cruz carnival features competitions, dancing and music in the streets. Minstrels enthrall revelers while masquerades add an air of decadence and mystery to the event. Several parades and festivals mark various occasions across the island. Most honour local patron saints and are celebrated with wagons, floats and much pomp.
The island was created from volcanic activity millions of years ago. So, it’s understandable that it should have one of the largest volcanoes in the world. The El Teide volcano has a 17 kilometres wide crater, and can be seen from almost anywhere on the island.
If you wish to discover the rich historical and anthropological aspects of the island, there are many museums available. The Museum of Nature and Man not only displays cultural artefacts of the island’s original inhabitants, but also has a section on preserving mummies. You can marvel at the works of Canarian artists at the Municipal Museum of Fine Arts. You should also pay a visit to the House of Honey where you will be fascinated by the way bee-keeping is carried out, and also get an opportunity to taste Tenerifan honeys.
For the gourmet connoisseur, the range of fish available is mind boggling – ranging from combtooth blennies and red porgy to groupers, mackerels and eels. Cooked simply to preserve their flavour, they are normally served with wrinkly potatoes and an indigenous sauce called mojo that comes in hot and mild forms.
Tenerife also makes some of the finest cheeses in the world. Dozens of varieties are made on the island including goat cheese and cottage cheese. Tenerife also has hundreds of years of history in winemaking, and boasts some of the best wines you can consume. Once you have a sip of their best wine – the malvasia canary – you will heartily agree.
With mild winters and cool summers, Tenerife is blessed with an eternal spring. It has two airports to receive travellers from around the globe – the Reina Sofia, and the Los Rodeos. Although good public transport is available, you will need a rental car to traverse this beautiful island and take in all its diverse beauty. Rent a vehicle from Canarias, Auto Reisen or several others at the airports.
